Journal

Prior to beginning this journal entry, review the “Cognition: Overview and Recent Trends” (pp. 3-8), “Neuroscience Bases of Learning” (pp. 9-15), and “Learning in a Cross-Cultural Perspective” (pp. 16-22) articles in your text, and read the American Educational Research Association’s Code of Ethics. It is important for you to have already completed your initial post in the “Learning and Cognition Perspectives” discussion before you compose this journal entry. Each week’s journal entry will include four parts. Each part does not need to be lengthy, but should demonstrate your understanding of the course content addressed within the week.

Part 1: Learning acquisition and development is a key area in the study of learning and cognition. Each week, you will include vocabulary from your readings in your journal that was unfamiliar to you or might be unfamiliar to your peers. Identify three to five words from this week’s content and research each word in the context of learning and cognition. Explain, in your own words, what each word means and how it is used in the context of learning and cognition.

Part 2: Based on this week’s discourse and content, access the Ashford University Library and research one peer-reviewed article pertaining to social processing that was published within the last 10 years. Provide a summary explanation of the findings on social processing in the context of your article. What implications should scholars consider based on this information? Support your explanation utilizing your course sources and your researched article.

Part 3: Consider the events from the past week of your life. Did you or someone you know experience anything that supports your conclusions about the effects of emotions and social learning on behaviors? Describe one personal real-life example of an occurrence that supports the implications of social learning on our behaviors and beliefs. As you share this information, consider and apply the professional standards found in “12.06 Anonymity of Sources”found in the AERA Code of Ethics.

Part 4: Based on the AERA Code of Ethics, if you have described an event that occurred with a friend or a colleague, what do your resources suggest may possibly affect how you personally interpret the event? What is the possibility for bias on your part, and how can it be avoided (or should it be)? In what ways can you address your personal biases when explaining observations to be ethical in reporting of the information? How important is this process to the maintenance of professional standards?

Each journal entry should be 400 to 700 words in length and should establish your understanding of the content, apply appropriate methods of ethical practices, and exhibit appropriate scaffolding of personal experience to the week’s content.

Case Study

When social workers use solution-focused therapy to work with a client, they employ a variety of principles and techniques. For example, social workers may de-emphasize client problems, look for previous solutions to client problems, and use the compliments technique to work with clients. Using these techniques and others in solution-focused therapy is important to the success of the intervention.

For this Assignment, review the case studies:

Jessica is a 21-year-old college student who comes to the campus counseling center for assistance. Her main concern is a lack of energy and loss of interest in her classes and social activities. She is a junior Psychology major and has a 3.1 grade point average (GPA). She states that, since the beginning of the semester, she has not been attending classes. She estimates she has missed half of her classes in the last 2 weeks. She reports she uses an alarm clock to wake up and generally sleeps 7- to 8-hours per night. However, this semester, she sets the alarm but does not get up when it goes off in the morning. Instead, she covers up her head and does not get up. She states that she does not go back to sleep but also does not get up and prepare for class.  She denies any alcohol or drug use that might have changed her energy level. She visited the health clinic and no physical issues were identified. The health clinic referred her to you. When asked if she thinks she is depressed, she states, “no, just unmotivated.” She states that there have been no major changes in her life. She feels very guilty about the situation and is afraid, if this behavior continues, she may be risking her education.

Think about intervention and assessment strategies that you might use based on the case study. Consider how you might use compliments and at least one other technique associated with solution-focused therapy to work with the clients in case study you selected. Must have effective references

Assignment 2: RA 1: Legal Requirements

Assignment 2: RA 1: Legal Requirements

The insanity defense is as old as it is controversial. There are times when insanity truly applies and times when it is not easy to determine. In either case, the documentation of services provided to these clients is typically heavily scrutinized by attorneys since documentation is the primary means used by courts to measure insanity as it meets legal standards. This assignment will allow you to examine the legal standards for insanity in your jurisdiction in addition to the requirements for the documentation of services provided to these individuals.

Tasks:

Search your state and regulatory boards, professional associations, state psychology boards, and state psychological associations. Use resources from professional literature to support your response. Professional literature may include relevant textbooks; peer-reviewed journal articles; and websites created by professional organizations, agencies, or institutions (.edu, .org, and .gov).

Write a 3- to 4-page paper, including the following:

  • What are the legal requirements in your jurisdiction regarding the documentation of services provided by a forensic psychology professional? If not-guilty-by-reason-of-insanity (NGRI) and guilty-but-mentally-ill (GBMI) evaluations are not recognized by your jurisdiction, review the legal requirements in a jurisdiction where they are the standard.
  • What are the specific laws and rules regarding the documentation of psychological services?
  • What are the differences between the requirements for clinical work and the requirements for forensic work, if any?
  • What standards are used in your jurisdiction for an insanity plea?
  • Do the insanity standards identify mental disease or defect with any exclusions, such as substance use? Explain.
  • How do the standards in your jurisdiction contrast with the standards presented in your course textbooks?
  • Do the insanity laws specify the presence of cognitive or volitional impairment as a threshold requirement to meet insanity? Provide brief examples.

Write a summary describing your thoughts on whether or not this tool could be useful for an applied practitioner working with athletes. How do you feel athletes would respond to an assessment like the TAIS?

Then, review the TAIS Performance Report for Andrew Athlete and assume that Andrew is a potential first round draft pick as a NFL quarterback. Respond to the following:

  • Do you believe Andrew Athlete would be a valuable asset to a team?
  • What are his mental strengths and weaknesses and how might they aid or inhibit his performance as a team leader and a quarterback?
  • How might you work with Andrew to improve his mental skills—what areas would you first focus your attention?

Discussion 1:

Theories of Intelligence, Moral Development, and the Strengths Perspective

Your ability to process information and apply it in other contexts represents one aspect of cognitive development. Theories of intelligence focus on the development of an individual’s ability to engage in abstract mental processes for the purposes of making sense of the environment (problem solving). Intelligence also involves psychological and moral development, in addition to physical maturation. Part of making sense of the environment and responding to it relates to an understanding of societal norms. Moral development represents an individual’s understanding of acceptable social human behavior. How might intelligence and moral development be related? As a social worker in support of the strengths perspective, understanding the development of your clients’ intelligence and morality can help to identify their strengths in order to encourage empowering behaviors.

For this Discussion, review this week’s resources. Select a theory of intelligence. Then, consider how intelligence might relate to moral development, referencing the theories from the readings. Finally, think about how you might view the theory you selected from a strengths perspective and what the potential implications of this theory might be for social workers who need to assess the intelligence of clients.

•Post an explanation of how you think intelligence relates to moral development, referencing theories from this week’s resources.

•Then describe the theory of intelligence you selected and explain how you might view it using a strengths perspective.

•Finally, explain the potential implications of this theory for social workers who need to assess the intelligence of clients.

Discussion 2:

The Use of Stimulants in the Treatment ADHD

Stimulant medications have been used since the mid-1900s to treat ADHD. More recently, medical professionals recognize a degree of complicity in the development of addiction in many of their clients with ADHD in connection with the use of stimulant treatment medications such as dextroamphetamine, levoamphetamine, and methylphenidate. As members of medical treatment teams, mental health professionals recognize their responsibility to treat current clients who have developed this comorbid condition as well as to work to prevent future problems of addiction that might arise from use of stimulant treatment. Clients deserve encompassing, accurate information in order to sort through potentially mixed messages from medical professionals, school personnel, family members, and others. Mental health professionals can provide or point to educational materials to help clients make informed choices, provide information about alternatives based on sound research, and help monitor for misuse of potentially addictive medications (Preston, O’Neal, & Talaga, 2017).

For this Discussion, review the media titled“Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Counseling Session” and consider the medications a psychiatrist might prescribe to treat ADHD. Conduct an Internet search or a Walden Library search for at least one peer-reviewed journal article that addresses issues related to the use of stimulants for the treatment of ADHD as it relates to the client in the media program.

Post a brief description of the client’s current presentation in the media program.

•Choose a medication that a psychiatrist might prescribe to treat ADHD and explain in detail the major action, intended effects, neurotransmitters implicated in its use, and side effects.

•Explain why you think this medication might be the most effective for treatment. Explain how you might address any issues related to the use of stimulants for the treatment of ADHD.

•Justify your choice based on the client’s presentation and support your position with the Learning Resources and your journal article.

•Explain an alternative approach to treating ADHD.
