Discussion and Reply to a Statement

PART 1 DISCUSSION

“Labeling and Mental Disorders” Please respond to the following:

  • Identify the major advantages and disadvantages of labeling a person with a mental disorder. Next, describe how culture can influence our perceptions of mental disorders. Justify your response.

PART 2

REPLY TO STATMENT

Advantages  would be knowing how to help them (friends, patient, stranger) whenever their being control be their disease. In some case their treatable and curable but just take time and patience. If the information is aware to public knowledge about these disorder and their symptoms we can make sure these patients are in a safe environment. The negative advantage would be not being able to help and treat them, also making fun of them and laughing at their disorder can cause serious damage on top of their mental pain. ignoring them and shutting them out from society and an environment. They need love and happy surrounding t keep them uplifted.

In my country (Jamaica) I never heard of half of these disorder that are know of my knowledge so it was hard to understand why a person was acting the way they did/ do and was it a joke or act or a spiritual curse causing them to behave in that manner. We are not fully aware so it can cause you to judge and be ignorant to a lot of things. Society can make you be a better person or hurt you in many ways and if these issues are not be taught to educate you what can you do but go along with what you believe  to be the answer.

1.       What role does an advocate play in the foster care system?

An advocate in the foster care come in many forms. It can be a judge, social worker or even the lawyer in the legal process. They provide the foster family with all the pertinent information they’d need when taking in the children. Our book note that Systemic strategies that encourage client-family-community-helper partnerships have great potential to enhance direct client services, increase advocacy. (McWhirter, J. J. (2013)

2.       What types of community services should be available for advocates to help the new adoptive and foster parents cope with the unique demands of being a parent?

I think support groups should be provided for those struggling or are curious about foster care, this way everyone could exchange information and give advice to one another. Counseling should be given to start the process and prepare the families mentally for what they are about to get involved with. Not many people understand what being a foster parent entails nor do they really know the problems these kids have had to deal with before coming into their home. Community also provide a frame work to help in foster parents coping, participating in a parent support group, participating in parent trainings, and using web based resources are services that the parents of about three out of ten children received regardless of adoption type. ( Adoption USA: A Chartbook Based on the 2007)

3.       What types of support groups might be helpful for new adoptive and/or foster care parents? Find at least one support group (in your community or a national group) that might be helpful for new adoptive/foster parents and explain how this organization would be helpful.

After some research, I could not find a support group for foster families in my area, but I did find an online support group. Daily Strength, is an online community where everyone posts their issues and advice for each other.

4.       The foster care system provides training to prospective foster parents. What types of screenings and training should child welfare advocates require parents to undergo prior to a child being placed with them? Explain why you chose these types of screenings and training.

I believe that everyone planning to foster/adopt needs tom undergo a full background check, fingerprint check, undergo parenting classes, counseling to prepare them for the child(ren) they will be taking in, random home checks while they have them in their custody and lastly, counseling for both the parents and the children just in case the relationship is not off to a good start and they can get to know one another. I chose these specific things because I feel that not enough is being done to make sure that these children are being placed properly. A lot of kids are being lost in the system and forgotten, mistreated, abused, etc. Doing all of this can help place these kids properly and the random home checks could help them see how the homes and children are being taken care of.

Several types of intervention and treatment approaches have been presented in your course textbook. In addition, evidence-based treatment programs are presented on the recommended government website, http://www.crimesolutions.gov/. The Office of Justice Programs’ CrimeSolutions.gov uses rigorous research to determine what works in criminal justice, juvenile justice, and crime victim services. On CrimeSolutions.gov, you will find:

  • Research on program effectiveness reviewed and rated by expert reviewers
  • Easily understandable ratings based on the evidence that indicates whether a program achieves its goals

Referencing the professional literature, address the following in a 6- to 8-page Microsoft Word document:

  • Identify two effective treatment approaches either from the textbook or from the website. One of the treatment programs should be based in a residential facility and the other should be community based. Use resources from professional literature in your research. Use resources from professional literature in your research. Professional literature may include the Argosy University online library resources, relevant textbooks, peer-reviewed journal articles, and websites created by professional organizations, agencies, or institutions (.edu, .org, and .gov).
  • Identify and describe the similarities and differences between community-based treatments and treatments in jails and prisons.
  • Identify the underlying principles common to both treatment programs that increase the chances of success. Treatment programs based in schools, the community, and the work site can serve as prevention programs. However, various factors need to be considered in establishing the nature of the treatment program.
  • Identify the factors that need to be considered in the treatment and prevention programs for offenders. Indicate the role that each of the factors plays.
  • Provide examples and rationales.

All written assignments and responses should follow APA rules for attributing sources.

Evaluation of a Weight Loss Program

Many Americans believe that they are overweight, by a few pounds to a few hundred pounds. Because of this, weight loss systems are big business. For this assignment, you are to select a weight loss system and evaluate it in terms of the information about the physiology of ingestive behavior covered this module.

  • Find a website, a brochure, a popular article, or an advertisement about weight control that proposes a mechanism for loss of excess weight.
  • Document the key proposals in terms of the main claims for success of the program (e.g., restriction of fat and small portions).
  • Describe the reasons provided for the effectiveness of the program (e.g., a full stomach reduces hunger).
  • Discuss the physiological components involved in the weight loss program. Clearly express an understanding of the physiology of the process of hunger, satiation, eating, and drinking as relevant for the weight loss method being described (e.g., long periods between meals would be likely to reduce blood sugar levels).
  • Present a critique of the materials based on the module information on eating and weight regulation.
  • Evaluate the proposal and suggest whether you would try this weight loss system or recommend it to someone else. Explain why or why not.

For this assignment, you are required to cite, at a minimum, the online course and the textbook for the course. Additional sources are welcome. Scholarly sources are preferred and can be found in the Argosy University library located under the Academic Resources section of Course Home. For reputable web sources, look for .gov or .edu sites as opposed to .com sites. Do not use Wikipedia.

Your paper should be double-spaced, in 12 point Times New Roman font, and with normal 1-inch margins; written in APA style; and free of typographical and grammatical errors. It should include a title page and a reference page. The body of the paper should be between 3 and 4 pages.

To complete the attached worksheet, download and save a copy of it with your first and last name in the document title, answer the questions and attach your completed copy here. Also attached are the article which must be used for completing it and a completion tip sheet.  The tip worksheet can be used both for preparation review before beginning the worksheet and as a checklist after you have completed the work to make sure you didn’t miss anything.

The worksheet guides you through the process of unpacking the key elements of the published scholarly journal article attached to this screen and demonstrating APA source citation skills, activities you will engage in frequently in the completion of a variety of assignments including essays, research papers and literature reviews in future courses. Quoting is not permitted.  All answers must be written as paraphrases, meaning that you must restate what you read in your own words, with the exception of technical terms such as the names of diagnostic tests. You are not required to source credit the article in your answers to the Section I. “Key Article Components” questions.  Section II. “Source citing and reference listing in APA format” is where you will demonstrate knowledge of how to correctly format source crediting in APA style.

Answers will be graded for accuracy, thoroughness, clarity and correct grammar and spelling. Your typed responses beneath each section of the worksheet should be double spaced and the total page length when completed should be at least 7 pages. Content of the worksheet document may NOT be removed or reordered.  Answers must be inserted in the spaces provided under each question.

Discussion 1: Women’sRoles, Feminist Theory, and Social Work Practice

Feminism contributed to a vast number of changes in women’s lives over several decades. From the kitchen to the boardroom and back again if women choose, feminism has empowered women to examine how they want to live in this world and encouraged them to seek that life. Despite this progress, there are frequent events that still challenge women’s roles in society. What is your understanding of women’s roles in society? How might your biases and your research into feminist theory influence your work as a social worker?

For the Discussion, review this week’s resources. Search reputable sources, including the Walden Library and the Internet, in order to select an article that focuses on a current event involving the role of women in society. Then, select a feminist theory from this week’s reading and reflect on how it relates to social work practice. Think about how that has influenced your understanding of women’s roles in society and whether your understanding has changed as a result of your research. Finally, think about how the selected feminist theory and your understanding of women’s roles might inform your work with Tiffani in the Bradley Family video case.

Note to Students: Reputable sources include scholarly peer-reviewed journals, other scholarly texts, and websites hosted by educational institutions (.edu) and reputable organizations (.org).

·       Post abrief of the article you selected that focuses on a current event involving the role of women in society.

·       Then, provide a brief description of the feminist theory you selected and how it relates to social work practice and an explanation of how that feminist theory has influenced your understanding of women’s roles in society.

·       Finally, explain how feminist theory and views of women’s roles inform your next steps with Tiffani.

Bradley Family Episode 6

Program Transcript

FEMALE SPEAKER: How long have you been a lawyer?

MALE SPEAKER: 10 years. I’ve been representing young women at Teens First

about the last two years.

FEMALE SPEAKER: I’ve never had a lawyer before.

MALE SPEAKER: Well I’m glad to be working with you.

FEMALE SPEAKER: It is always this awful?

MALE SPEAKER: What do you mean? Did something happen?

FEMALE SPEAKER: No. The people here treat me great.

MALE SPEAKER: What’s wrong then?

FEMALE SPEAKER: Well the people here, like you, you listen to me and say all

this isn’t my fault. But then when we were in court the police, those other lawyers,

they may be sound like kind of horrible person.

MALE SPEAKER: Listen to me, Tiffany, you’re the victim here, not a criminal. But

under the current law, even though you’re only 16, you’re still seen as someone

who’s committed the crime of prostitution, regardless of the fact that others

exploited you and put you in that position.

FEMALE SPEAKER: It just doesn’t seem fair.

MALE SPEAKER: I promise that I will do my very best in court to emphasize the

circumstances that helped get you in this trouble.

FEMALE SPEAKER: They could all go to hell.

MALE SPEAKER: I totally understand your anger. But it’s important that you

always show respect to the police in the court always. It’s the law. No matter how

unjust it may be. Do you understand?

FEMALE SPEAKER: Yes.

MALE SPEAKER: Good.

FEMALE SPEAKER: Did you notice how most of them saying those nasty things

in court about me were men?

Discussion 2: Treating Anxiety Disorder

Anxiety levels range dramatically from individual to individual and from situation to situation. To illustrate the spectrum of normal to psychopathological anxiety, consider the fear of dogs. Many people are reasonably cautious when encountering an unfamiliar dog, rationalizing that the animal has some potential to inflict injury and will therefore not approach an unattended dog. However, some people avoid even the possibility of encountering a dog by never leaving their homes. In addition, some people may turn to available substances, such as alcohol, to self-medicate to overcome their fear, creating the potential for developing a comorbid addictive disorder. In short, anxiety disorders present a complex range of challenges for the mental health professional and require a multifaceted approach in creating treatment strategies.

For this Discussion, view the media case studies “Anxiety Disorder Case Study: Willy” and “Anxiety Disorder Case Study: June.” Select one case study and consider the general challenges in assessment, differential diagnosis, and use of psychopharmacological treatment for the symptoms demonstrated. Think about the uses and benefits of anxiolytic medications in the treatment of panic disorders, phobias, obsessive-compulsive disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), generalized anxiety disorder, and social anxiety.

·       Postthe challenges of treating the anxiety disorder of the client you selected.

·       Then describe at least three potential anxiolytic medications that may be effective in treating this client and explain the potential addiction risk of each.

·       Explain how this information might influence a mental health professional’s approach to counseling this client.

·       Finally, explain the role of the mental health professional in communicating concerns to other health care professionals.

Anxiety Disorder Case Study: Willy

Program Transcript

WILLY: My name is Willy. I’m 35 years old. I’ve been divorced for five years and I

don’t have any children. I am not seeing anyone at the moment.

My biggest problem is reliving events from my past. I joined the army when I was

18 years old. I love the structure of military life and the resources the army

provided. I enjoyed the educational opportunities. And I also knew I would have a

roof over my head and something to eat.

I was doing well in the military. So I stayed in for about 10 years. During that

time, the US became involved in a number of foreign conflicts and initiatives. I

was deployed to Afghanistan during one of my last years in the army.

In Afghanistan, my perspective on what I was accomplishing shifted dramatically.

In one instance, I witnessed my best, most trusted friend shoot a young,

unarmed girl just because she wore hijab. My fears after witnessing this event

changed me forever. I became disenchanted with the army as I thought about all

the people who were killed.

In the face of that girl, I saw my sister’s daughter, Heather. It seems now that

every night I had dreams of war and genocide. Occasionally, during the worst

times, I thought about whether it would have been better for me to have died in

that country instead of returning to this miserable life. I wonder every day, if I had

turned in my friend, would I not be haunted by this girl’s memory.

I panic at some point most days. I become agitated and lash out when my mind

is on the past. It interferes with my work and my relationships with my coworkers.

After I calm down, I tell myself that it doesn’t make sense for me to be panicking.

But I know it will happen again. Sometimes, I’m afraid I might hurt someone if they startle me.

Colonialism and Neutral Parties

Topic: Colonialism and Neutral Parties

Question/Prompt: Choose one of the five prompts below on which to discuss.

  1. The Colonialist model is intent on proclaiming the superiority of theology over psychology (nearly to the exclusion of psychology, in some cases). What aspects of the relationship of theology and psychology can you affirm in this model, and what do you think is in need of critique?
  2. The Colonialist model ostensibly recognizes the value of psychology, but it does not typically result in deep engagement with the findings or methods of psychology. How might this be applied to a topic such as eating disorders or depression? What would be some of the advantages and disadvantages of this approach?
  3. Entwistle distinguishes between scriptural authority and theological interpretation. Do you agree? Why might this distinction be important? Support your view with an example.
  4. Why do people who adopt a Neutral Parties model think that we should keep theology out of psychology, and why do their critics contend that it is dangerous to keep theology out of psychology? Which is the stronger position? Use an example to support your view.
  5. The Neutral Parties model is intent on proclaiming the independence of psychology from any ideology, including Christian theology. What about the relationship of theology and psychology can you affirm in this model, and what do you think is in need of critique?

At least 500 words in response to the provided prompt. You must support your assertions with at least 3 citations in current APA format. You may use the course textbook Chp 10 Entwistle and Chp 2, 4, 6 Johnson and scholarly articles only and the Bible as sources.
