In a broad sense, these chapters provide an introduction to the occupational safety and health profession and general hazard control principles and methods. Chapter 1 presents the importance of safety and health for engineers and technical professionals. Chapter 2 provides an overview of the safety and health professions and presents information on how engineers and technical professionals contribute to safety and health. Chapter 3 presents fundamental concepts and terms associated with safety and health. Incident and accident theories are presented along with common preventive strategies. Lastly, Chapter 9 addresses the general principles of hazard control and provides the basis for much of the premise for hazard control methods that address particular hazards.
