Short Answer

1. In your own words, define the term “assessment” as it is used in the fitness field. Include examples of the assessments you would use to help design a program for an older client. Explain why you chose those assessments and how you expect the results to affect program design. (5)

2. Use the Karvonen formula to calculate the target heart rate at 65% intensity for a 70-year-old client who has a resting heart rate of 80 beats per minute. Discuss why it is important to be able to accurately predict training and maximum heart rates for your clients. (5)

3. In your own words, describe how and when you would use the Borg RPE scale. Describe training situations where using RPE values would be more appropriate than a predicted maximum heart rate. (4)

4. Use the tables provided in Unit 10 of your course text to determine the strength ratings for both upper and lower body for the two clients listed below. How would you explain the results to your clients?

Bob: male, 180 lbs., 55 years of age, leg press 1RM = 255lbs, bench press 1RM = 150lbs. (3)

Sally: female, 140lbs., 62 years of age, leg press 1 RM = 155lbs., bench 1RM = 65lbs. (3)

Learning Experience (20)
Choose one of the following learning experiences. Perform the experience as instructed and write a 250 word essay describing your experience and what you gained from participating. Provide a comprehensive explanation of your findings, including the answer to the learning experience, as well as how this knowledge can benefit you in your service to your future clients, friends, and/or family.

1. Perform a variation of a graded exercise test on yourself, with the help of a friend. Use the Karvonen formula to predict your maximum heart rate, then calculate 85% of your maximum heart rate. Find a treadmill that has an adjustable incline or grade. Walk on the treadmill at 2.0 mph for the first four minutes at 0% grade for a warm up. Leave the speed of the treadmill set at 2.0 mph, but at the four-minute mark increase the grade 3%. Continue to increase the grade 3% at each two-minute interval thereafter. For example, at the six- minute mark the grade should be 6%, at the eight-minute mark the grade should be 9% and so on. Continue on the treadmill until you have reached 85% of your maximum heart rate, then terminate the test. Cool down for 5-7 minutes. What was the experience like? Were you working as hard as you expected at 85%? Describe the experience in detail.

2. Analyze the role of initial and ongoing assessment of an exercise program. List as many assessments as you can, try to include some that are not discussed in your text. Give examples of how you could use the values to show progress or need. Be specific.

3. Perform the following experiment on yourself and a friend. A heart rate monitor is highly recommended! First, use the Karvonen formula to predict you and your friend’s maximum heart rates. Determine target heart rates for each of you at 50, 60, 70 and 80 percent using the predicted maximum heart rate. Walk on a treadmill and gradually increase the resistance until you have reached each of the target heart rates that you have predicted. Each time you reach a target heart rate, have your friend ask you for your rate of perceived exertion (RPE). You should have an RPE value that correlates to heart rates at 50, 60, 70, and 80% of your maximum. Analyze the information that you collected and explain how you will use RPE values with your older clients. What are some of the advantages? Give specific examples in your essay.
