Option 2: “Diversity refers to more than race, religion, gender, and ethnicity. It is a broad term that encompasses many differences, including age, disability status, military experience, sexual orientation, economic class, educational level, personality characteristics, and life styles” (Curtis & Manning, 2015). Each of us has our own beliefs, our own traditions, and our own opinions about the world, this is what makes us a diverse country. Using cultural sensitivity means accepting the differences of each other and considering each person as a unique individual. America is a melting pot of cultures, races, beliefs, religions and we all have various life experiences. When we become intolerant of the diverse culture, we are subject to discrimination which can have harmful effects (Curtis & Manning, 2015).

To decrease our ignorance, each person first should take a look at themselves and reflect on their own beliefs. Being alerted by someone that you are being insensitive means you have shown your ignorance. Having a solid foundation about your own beliefs and culture will allow for learning about other’s who are different. “Asking honest questions, demonstrating empathy and seeking understanding, you can respond to differences in an appropriate and respectful way” (Practicing Cultural Sensitivity, 2017). Also try to reflect back on a time when you were different from the majority and how you felt in that situation. Treating each person as an individual will help lessen stereo-types and allow you to learn about their culture.
