  In my area of criminal justice, the crime lab relies on different types of reporting.  Through case files and police reports, as a crime scene investigator, they are important because they offer essential information pertaining to the case of interest or crime scene.  Through police reports, I am able to understand the grounds of the case through the first responder and get an idea of what the scene was like before the arrival of the crime scene crew.  Through case files, detailed information is offered through various reports, photographs, and other detailing information that may be essential to helping figure out the crime scene.  These pieces of information can help solve the crime scene if they are properly filled out and detailed.
