Course Project: Part I

This course has major project assignments due in Week 3 and Week 5.  It will take more than a week’s effort to adequately complete them.  Plan time to start the research and work on those assignments earlier than the weeks in which they are due.

For the final project of this course, you will select any one of the following companies and analyze how leaders of your chosen company handled various international issues and challenges.

Course Project Tasks

You will explore globalization and its strategic implications for your chosen company.  You will also determine how leaders of your chosen company respond to globalization.

Week 1: Globalization and International Leadership

In this assignment, you will explore how globalization of businesses has given rise to several new challenges that leaders must address when doing business in the global arena.

An organizational leader’s goal should be to achieve well beyond what was expected on the basis of the other organizational inputs available.  This rule applies to leaders in domestic companies as well as multinational companies (MNCs).  There are many advantages of international operations.  Perhaps the greatest advantage is that firms can gain new customers for their products and services, which increases revenues.  Other advantages are that costs and risks can be spread over a wide number of markets—diversification helps to reduce risks.  While larger markets offer the advantage of economies of scale, MNCs can also establish low-cost production facilities near raw materials or cheap labor.

Considering this basic understanding of the strategic initiatives available to international leaders, address the following:

  • Research the company selected and provide a brief overview of the company.  Include major countries where the company does business and primary products or services.
  • Using research, analyze why globalization of industries is common today.  Discuss why some industries are more “global” than others and provide information about the level of globalization for the company you selected.
  • Evaluate how consumption patterns are becoming similar worldwide.  What are the strategic implications of this trend for your chosen company?  What do the leaders of the company do to formulate and implement a response to the trend?
  • Assess the issues that international leaders of your chosen company must address when doing business abroad (e.g., advantages and disadvantages).

Assignment – Week 2

Thematic Apperception Test

This exercise will provide you with an abbreviated experience of how an apperception test works. You will be assessed on one item and the system will automatically evaluate your responses and return results immediately. As you complete this exercise, consider how this experience of evaluation feels to you, and consider how this could feel for clients.

To Prepare:

  • Review the Thematic      Apperception Test example, “Psychology of Words: Projective Tests of Words and Language,” found in the Learning Resources for this week and complete the exercise.
  • Submit your response. The web site will score your response automatically.
  • Review your individual results and reflect on how accurate they may be and how they may influence your counselor identity.
  • Once you complete the test, copy and paste your results into a Word document to save your results for further review.

Assignment:

Write a 2-to-3 page paper where you:

  1. Summarize your results
  2. Reflect on how accurate your individual results were, or were not, for you
  3. Discuss how your results influence your counselor identity (e.g., what are my strengths as a counselor; where I might be challenged; do I have biases and triggers?).

For this task, you will calculate the mean, median, and mode for a fictitious data set.

Instructions

This assignment has two parts, which will be submitted in one document.

For this task, you will calculate the mean, median, and mode for a fictitious data set. These data represent the results of a fictitious study, which investigates whether a new drug (Drug A) is more effective than a placebo (i.e., an inactive substance) in the treatment of depression. The researcher is also interested in whether the effects of the drug varies by age so participants between the ages of 18-39 years were recruited (the younger adult group), and participants between the ages of 60-80 years were recruited (the older adult group). Participants were randomly assigned to either the placebo group or to the drug group (Drug A). All participants were first screened to ensure they met the criteria for depression. After 2 months of taking either the placebo or Drug A, participants returned to the lab and completed a measure of depressive symptomology called the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II).

Part 1:

For the first part of this assignment, create a table showing the mean, median, and mode for each participant group and each drug condition on the score for the BDI-II. The data for each participant are contained in the “Participant Data” worksheet in the Data1 File. You may use Excel or you can calculate these values by hand. Your table should look like the following:

Younger Adults
PlaceboYounger Adults
Drug AOlder Adults
PlaceboOlder Adults
Drug AMean    Median    Mode

You must have the “Data Analysis” add-in installed. Directions for this installation are provided in the “Data Analysis in Excel 2016” file located under your weekly resources. These instructions will also work for Excel 2010. This document also describes how to calculate basic descriptive statistics using Excel.

Part 2:

For this part of the assignment, create a bar chart in Excel. You will need the “Summary Data for Graph” worksheet from the Data 1 file. Remember, the bar chart shows the means for each condition rather than individual participant data, and the data in this worksheet have been organized accordingly.

For the steps regarding how to create the bar graph, review the steps in “Creating a Bar Graph in Excel 2016” or “Creating a Bar Graph in Excel 2010,” located under your weekly resources. These instructions should also work with other versions of Excel.

You should copy and paste the graph you create into a Word document, along with your table showing the mean, median, and mode.

Length:1-2 pages

Your graph and table should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts presented in the course by providing new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your response should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards.

In this Assignment, analyze how distinct cultures can contribute to the larger military culture.

As you explore the various cultures within the military, you may wonder how some of the differences affect the overall culture of the military. How do these differences influence the identity, roles, stressors, and needs of military personnel? The military has evolved over many years to include a rich ethnically and culturally diverse population. This diversity has led the military to break down stereotypes and create a new “norm” for working as a team despite individual differences.

In this Assignment, analyze how distinct cultures can contribute to the larger military culture.

Then, instead of gathering data on your own test, you are provided with a set of test data to analyze.

Constructing a useful psychological test is a meticulous process. First, you must to formulate a clear, empirically-based definition of what is to be measured and carefully consider the items and response formats that would best measure this construct. The test items are created based on a theory or by sampling a domain of knowledge. Subject-matter experts are often called upon to generate and evaluate the initial test items. The test is then given to a large sample of people and, after careful analysis, the statistical properties of each item are scrutinized and decisions are made about item retention, elimination, and revision.

As part of this class, you complete many of the steps necessary to construct a test. Test construction can be broken into two main phases. In phase one, you create test items. In phase two, you gather and analyze data from those items in order to choose the best items (i.e., those that best measure the construct you have identified and defined). Ideally, your assignment would be to create items, gather data, and then analyze the data that you gathered. Unfortunately, test construction generally requires data from hundreds of participants, which is impractical to do over the course of one quarter. Therefore, your assignment will be broken down into two parts:

  1. First, you design a test. You decide on a construct, write your test specifications, create test items, and have your classmates review your items.
  2. Then, instead of gathering data on your own test, you are provided with a set of test data to analyze.

This week, consider what you would like your proposed test to measure. You should select a construct that is applicable to organizations (e.g., intelligence, personality, integrity). You describe this construct and submit it to your Instructor for approval this week.

The Assignment (1 paragraph)

By Day 7 of this week, submit a brief description of the construct of interest for your Final Project to your Instructor for approval, including cited evidence from the empirical literature that helped you create an operational definition of this construct.

discuss the specific tactic that was used, the target behavior, and the unwanted behavior change. How could you have planned for this differently?

Provide an example of two different behavior change strategies (e.g., – response cost, positive reinforcement, non-contingent reinforcement, negative punishment, etc.) where an unwanted behavior change might occur as a result of your treatment intervention. Using behavior analytic terms, discuss the specific tactic that was used, the target behavior, and the unwanted behavior change. How could you have planned for this differently? Are there any ethical, legal, practical, individual and/or social validity considerations to go along with each method of change which you described?
