Discussion 1:Self-Determination

Discussion 1:Self-Determination

In the Christ & Diwan (2008) article, the authors list seven domains that social workers should address in order to fully assess an older client’s needs. Each domain is considered equally important. This comprehensive evaluation fits well with the social work perspective that it is important to not only address the internal concerns of clients but also their environment. Making decisions for older adults without their input occurs often. In society people sometimes treat their elders like children—making decisions for them based on what they think is best rather than from the client’s perspective. While at times this may be well intentioned, the potential for infantilism and, in turn, compromised self-determination, occurs.

For this Discussion, review the program case study for the Petrakis family. You will focus not on Helen, but on her mother-in-law, Magda. What decisions were made about Magda’s treatment without a formal assessment and/or her input? Consider how Christ & Diwan’s (2008) seven domains relate to Magda’s case. Complete an assessment for Magda and identify the choices that were made without her feedback.

· Post a summary of your assessment of Magda’s situation that addresses the seven domains.

· Fill in the gaps in content as necessary.

· Describe ways you would have included Magda in the original assessment and treatment plan.

· Include questions you would have asked Magda and her professional support system (doctors, nurses, etc.) to gain further insight into the situation.

Discussion 2: Elder Abuse

Each year on or around June 15, communities and municipalities around the world plan activities and programs to recognize World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, a day set aside to spread awareness of the abuse of the elderly (Center of Excellence on Elder Abuse & Neglect, 2013). The abuse of older adults is a growing concern and statistics suggest that the number of elders experiencing abuse is an alarmingly high number. Research suggests that close to half the people diagnosed with dementia experience some form of abuse (Cooper, C., Selwood, A., Blanchard, M., Walker, Z., Blizard, R., & Livingston, G., 2009; Wiglesworth, A., Mosqueda, L., Mulnard, R., Liao, S., Gibbs, L., & Fitzgerald, W., 2010, as cited on http://www.ncea.aoa.gov/Library/Data/index.aspx). Elder abuse takes on many forms and can include physical, emotional, psychological, and economic abuse. The legendary American actor, Mickey Rooney, spoke to the United States Senate, describing his own experiences of pain and neglect at the hands of his stepson, asking legislators to take seriously the abuse of the elderly.

For this Discussion, find a scholarly article that presents some of the most salient psychosocial issues related to elder abuse.

· Post a summary of the article you found.

· How does the article reinforce the importance of assessing potential abuse and neglect when working with the elderly?

· Describe prevention and/or intervention strategies on the micro, mezzo, and macro levels that can be used to address the issue of abuse and neglect of the elderly.

Module 2 – Case ARGUMENTATION

Module 2 – Case

ARGUMENTATION

Case Assignment

Note: Module 2 SLP should be completed before the Module 2 Case.

No secondary sources are to be used in the process of writing this first paper; it is to be entirely written based on one’s point of view and supported with body points and details.

Reflecting on the four gender-related videos for Module 2 (see below), write a well-organized and well-supported essay in which you help challenge society’s limiting gender narratives.

A well-organized essay has a beginning, middle, and an end. The beginning, or introduction, should include an opening sentence to grab your reader’s attention. Follow the opening sentence with a brief background on the topic or situation. In this case, it would be an explanation of gender roles, stereotypes, myths, and/or controls in society today. The last sentence of the introduction is the thesis statement. The thesis states the main point of the essay, which in this case, would be a statement affirming what needs to be done to limit gender narratives in society today.

A well-supported essay includes supporting points, details, and examples. For this essay, you must decide the best way to organize the body of the paper. Will you have a paragraph for each change? Will you divide the body of your paper into three or more paragraphs, one for each point? In any case, each body paragraph must support (explain) your reasoning (rationale) using specific details. Each body paragraph must have a topic sentence that states the main point of the paragraph.

The conclusion typically summarizes the main points of the essay and/or closes with a lasting impression that connects the reader to their world. In this case, where is our society headed? Is it too late for change?

Be sure to proofread your essay and edit for proper grammar, punctuation, diction (word choice), and spelling, as errors in sentence skills will lower a final grade. A grade will be determined based on the Module 2 Case expectations and the Trident University General Education rubric for English.

Papers must be double-spaced in Times or Times New Roman font (12 cpi) with standard one-inch margins.

The first person “I” is not used in a formal essay.

This essay must include no less than SIX citations from the assigned background material for module 2. Citations are to be a combination of direct quotations and paraphrased quotations with or without the author’s name. No other sources are to be used for this assignment.

Assignment Expectations

  • Write an essay (no less than four pages in length) that states and supports an original thesis statement in which you help challenge society’s limiting gender narratives.
  • Demonstrate the ability to identify credible and reliable sources for use in a well-supported and cohesive essay.
  • Demonstrate the ability to write a direct quote, paraphrased, or summary citation in APA Style

Articl On Abortion Issues

Click here for a U.S. National Library of Medicine National Institute of Health article on How

to Write a Research Proposal at http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3282423/

This will serve as a good general overview.  Your proposal will need to comply with the

instructions below.

By the end of Week 4 of the course term, a draft of a research study proposal is due. You will not be

conducting this research, just proposing it as a hypothetical study. The study will focus on a real world

socio-cultural issue.  You may use an existing published study from an academic journal article as a

prototype example for developing your proposal, but the study method and focus of research you

propose must be your own original research idea. The paper will consist of an Introduction, a

Literature Review, an Hypothesis, a Method section, and a References page.  The paper must be a

minimum of 14 pages (excluding Title, Abstract, and References pages).

Your research study proposal draft will include:

An INTRODUCTION

Topic overview

Research questions

Significance of this question to the field of study (e.g., how is it relevant to social psychology in

particular)

A LITERATURE REVIEW

At least 4 brief summaries of other similar studies.  The Literature Review section must

not be merely one summary after another with no meaningful connections

between them, but rather should include, following a description of and

careful review and critique of the summaries, descriptions of how they are

related to one another.  This is done via transition statements between

descriptions of the various summaries such that the paper interweaves all

the articles into a coherent and well-articulated review of scholarly

publications related to the paper topic focus.

What is a Literature Review?

A brief review of the literature means that you will report (search some key words in the on-line

library in Psych Abstract or some such area) on studies that are similar to the one you propose. This

might include an old classic study that launched the field of study in your topic but should include

some background studies and at least one rather recent study into the same area as yours. For this

assignment, 4 or 5 quick reviews would suffice. The reviews are typically no more than a paragraph

explaining in simple terms, who did the research (with the APA style “year” of the study in

parentheses), what they were hoping to explore, and what the results of their study were.

Wrap up with a FORMAL HYPOTHESIS

What is an Hypothesis?

At the conclusion of your review of the literature you will summarize your research idea and then state

your hypothesis. A good proposal hypothesis should directly state, without reservations, the

expectations of the study. For example, “Hypothesis: The experimental group will significantly improve

their scores on the _____measure after viewing the role play of bullying behavior.” Or another

example: “Hypothesis: Subjects will show decreased empathy on a survey of compassion and

empathy for the learners that used the weakest excuses.”   Or, “Hypothesis: There will be a significant

difference between the groups with the experimental group having higher scores than the control

group.”

A METHOD Section

The Method section includes a detailed description of measuring devices to be used for data collection

(Examples: Surveys, questionnaires, individual interviews, case studies, naturalistic or controlled

observation), of the study participants, or "subjects" and of the procedures, or how measures will be

taken.  You should include three sub-sections titled Subjects, Measures, and Procedures.  Also include

a brief statement regarding how you intend to analyze the data you collect (e.g., regarding statistical

analysis of data).

Draft you reviewed during your Writing Center conference

Some people believe that it is human nature to be cruel to others.  These people might argue that this cruelty is why Stanley Milgram’s subjects acted as they did, and why no one helped Kitty Genovese.  Do you accept this explanation of human psychology?  Yes?  No?  Somewhat? And why do you see it like you do? What kinds of circumstances induce cruel behavior?  What does this tell you about how cruelty fits into our human nature?  Use the cases we read about to help you construct your argument.

In coming up with your own position on this issue, I encourage you to think about all that you’ve learned about in the cases we have read about for this assignment:

·         “The Perils of Obedience” by Stanley Milgram,

·         The Kitty Genovese case as discussed in Chapter 4 of Lauren Slater’s Opening Skinner’s Box “In the Unlikely Event of a Water Landing: Darley and Latane’s Training Manual—A Five Stage Approach”

·         Darley and Latane’s experiments as discussed in Chapter 4 of Lauren Slater’s Opening Skinner’s Box “In the Unlikely Event of a Water Landing: Darley and Latane’s Training Manual—A Five Stage Approach”

Consider the grey areas, rather than arguing strictly on one side or the other.  Instead of saying YES we are cruel, or NO we are not, try to come up with a more complex answer to explain human behavior in these cases.

In your essay, be sure to include:

·         Support for your argument with relevant ideas, information, and quotations from Milgram’s essay

·         Support for your argument with relevant ideas, information, and quotations from Slater’s Chapter 4

Things to Shoot For:

·         Show that you have carefully read the texts from this unit, and that you have fully digested and considered the different viewpoints and evidence.

·         Show you are really thinking about the topic—these are complex questions, so don’t settle for easy answers.  And don’t feel that you have to take an either-or position.

·         Write so that someone not in our class could understand it.  Assume your audience has not read these texts.  That means you’ll need to briefly summarize key ideas/information and explain any unfamiliar terms.

·         Write at least 4 complete pages, typed, 12 point font, double-spaced, 1 inch margins.

Turn-in Procedures:

·         Your final draft is due Friday, May 2nd

·         Submit the essay to Turnitin.com via Blackboard by 11:59 PM on Friday, May 2nd

·         Bring a hard copy to class with the following documents in one pocket of your assignment folder:

o   Writing Center Signature form

o   Draft you reviewed during your Writing Center conference

o   Any drafts you brought to class for peer review, conferences, etc.

o   A blank rubric

Week 12:

·         Write about a time in which you behaved cruelly towards another person.  What did you do?  Why?  What were the circumstances around your behavior?  Did you intend to behave cruelly, or did something else spur the behavior?  Explain the situation, and connect your analysis with Milgram’s text.

Week 13:

·         Choose one reaction of a participant in the Milgram experiment and explain what this shows readers about human nature.

Week 14:

·         Have you ever been in a situation similar to that of Kitty Genovese, when something bad was happening to someone else and people around hesitated to help?  Or have you been in the opposite situation, where something bad was happening and everyone clamored to help?  Describe one of these situations from your own life and reflect on the reasons why people acted as they did.  Are there similarities or differences between your situation and that described in “In the Unlikely Event of a Water Landing”?

Community Windshield Survey

Directions:

  1. Download the Community Windshield Survey (Attached)form. You will type answers directly onto this Word document. Your form does not need to follow APA formatting; however, you are expected to use a professional writing style with complete sentences, accurate grammar, and correct spelling within the fill-in sections. References are not needed as this should be based on your observations.
  2. You are required to use the linked form provided for this assignment. Assignments that do not follow the current guidelines or use the required form will be evaluated for evidence of an academic integrity violation.
  3. After the due date, there will be no opportunity for revision or resubmission of assignments that have been uploaded to the submission area. It is your responsibility to submit the correct assignment to the correct submission area.

Guidelines:

  1. Introduction to the Community: Identify the community you will be using for this assignment with the city and state, and provide a brief, one-paragraph description of the community. Your community should be the area where you live or the area surrounding your work setting. The community must include a residential area and be a large enough area to answer the survey questions. Do not include epidemiological or demographic data as this is based on what you observe.
  2. Windshield Survey: Assess your community by doing a windshield survey. Information about the components of a windshield survey is located in your textbook, Nies and McEwen (2019). Drive through the area and report your observations by answering the questions on the form. Be sure to include what you observed related to each of these categories, and also include any significant items that are missing in your community because this may be equally important in identifying a community health problem.
    1. Community vitality
    2. Indicators of social and economic conditions
    3. Health resources
    4. Environmental conditions related to health
    5. Social functioning
    6. Attitude toward healthcare
    7. Note: It is helpful to conduct this assessment at least two different times: during the day or evening, on a weekday, and/or on the weekend. If possible, plan on asking someone to drive during your survey so that you can take notes.
  3. Vulnerable population: Identify the aggregate or vulnerable populations that you observed in your community during your drive through. What did you observe about this population?
  4. Community problem: Based on your assessment in the survey above, identify and discuss one priority community health problem that a community health nurse could positively impact.Example: If you observed teens who were pregnant or had young children during your survey and felt this was a priority problem in your community, the diagnosis could be
Risk of unintended pregnancy among adolescent girls in XXXX community as evidence by observation of pregnant teens and teens caring for young children during windshield survey.
  5. Healthy People 2020 Objective: Go to the Healthy People topic areas at https://www.healthypeople.gov/2020/topics-objectives. Find a topic area that relates to one of the vulnerable populations you observed. Click on the topic area, and then click on the green Objectives tab. Review the objectives within that topic area to complete the relevant sections of the form. State the Healthy People 2020 objective number (not just a goal) that describes your problem.Example: The topic area Family Planning would be relevant. You would click on Family Planning, and then click the green Objectives tab, and you might choose
FP-8.1 “Reduce pregnancies among adolescent females aged 15 to 17 years” (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services: Healthy People 2020, 2018, Objectives: Family Planning, para 8).
  6. Summary: Complete the summary of learning section.
  7. References: The purpose of this assignment is to document your observations of your community. Outside sources other than Healthy People 2020 should not be used. We have included this reference on the Windshield Survey form for you.
