DISCUSSION QUESTION

Refer to your reading assignment and identify a leading safety movement in the US today that leaders can use to help develop safe nursing teams. How would you use this if you were the leader of the nursing team? What characteristics would an effective leader need in this situation?

Classmate

One critical safety movement that can be used to develop and improve safe nursing teams is called TeamSTEPPS. TeamSTEPPS stands for Team Strategies and Tools to Enhance Performance and Patient Safety. It was designed by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, with it’s primary purpose being “to increase attention to safety within healthcare organizations” (Yoder-Wise, 2019, p.25). The most crucial aspect of TeamSTEPPS is safe communication. If I were the leader of the nursing team, I would begin using this initiative by ensuring that there is a common language among every team member, along with understood protocols (Plonien, Williams, 2015, p. 466). This can possibly prove to be difficult during modern times as safety advances are constantly taking place, including changing communication techniques such as “do not use” abbreviation lists. However, ensuring that each member of the team is using the SBAR method of communication by thorough observation is a step towards ensuring common language. The nurse leader could also hold debriefings at shift change to inquire about communication among members and physicians. Educating newly hired nurses on communication protocols and providing activities for them to use proper and safe communication before they start on the floor would get them comfortable and confident in their skills.  Another aspect of TeamSTEPPS is Mutual Support. This is when team members and leaders recognize when a member is overloaded, and steps in to ensure patient safety by assisting where necessary (Plonien, Williams, 2015, p. 468). The leader of the nursing team could facilitate team meetings to discuss what to observe in fellow members, which tasks are appropriate to help with or complete entirely, and when it is appropriate to ask for help. The nurse leader should also affirm to the team members that it is okay to ask for help, and emphasize that patient safety is at risk when their care is rushed.

An effective leader would need to have excellent communication skills in order to use the TeamSTEPPS approaches. Their communication skills must be flexible in order to impact each member of the team. They would also need to be able to adapt to changing situations and environments (Yoder-Wise, 2019, p. 6). Lastly, an effective leader must have patience and perseverance in this situation because it may take multiple attempts to find an effective plan that improves patient safety outcomes.
