(1) Carl Woese: When Carl Woese died in 2012, a number of obituaries were published, detailing his scientific accomplishments. Read one or more of the following obit articles. Based on your readings, explain what Woese’s main contributions were to biology and why it is considered important.

(2) Chemicals of Life. Watch the Instructor’s video on “Chemicals of Life” in the “Instructor’s Insights” area of Week 2. Explain something you learned from the video and how it relates to this week’s lesson.

(3) Properties of water.  Two of the properties of water are that water stabilizes temperature and that water has cohesion. Explain how these properties are helpful to living organisms. Also explain how hydrogen bonding between adjacent water molecules contributes to these properties.
