Big Science was a major part of our society during the 20th century. Countries were beginning to spend a lot of money to fund large-scale projects so that the can be the leader in cutting edge technology and innovations. For instance, the Manhattan Project, which was launch by the United States during World War II which produced the first atomic bomb. This project cost nearly 2 billion dollars to fund and employed about 130,000 people. This research took place at more than 30 sites across the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada. The result was two atomic bombs one that was made of a gun-type fission weapon and the other bomb was a more complex implosion-type nuclear weapon. These bombs were both used in the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Another example of Big Science is that CERN’s Large Hadron Collider, this project is the biggest piece of scientific equipment in the world. It is a particle accelerator that can speed up subatomic particles and smash them to re-create conditions that prevailed at the time of the universe came into being. (Bowles, 2012) With this apparatus, scientist are trying to get some insight that might help them explain the origin of the universe. This collider cost about 6.4 billion dollars and is the only one in existence. According to Europe, this device has already proven its worth because it has reestablished Europe’s scientific reputation after World War I.
I believe that these two Big Science projects helped ignite the popularity of science to the world. Not only did these developments pique the interest of their government for financial support. Funding for this research was now sought after by a wider spectrum of society, such as industry and public sectors, this rationale was used so that this basic science would be able to make a profit in the long run and be useful to society someday. (Bowles, 2012). Not only was Big Science costly, but it also gained a lot of notoriety and became popular in society.
