Jeanne Blum, RN, is a nurse on a  LDRP unit. Recently, the policy and    procedures manual for Jeanne’s unit included the premature rupturing of membranes of a laboring patient    as a practice acceptable for nurses to perform. Jeanne    and some of her coworkers shared their concern over    lunch about this new responsibility.They felt uncomfortable with the possibility of cord prolapse and    other potential medical complications resulting from    this practice. Jeanne gathered data from her state and    many others states and noted that her hospital was    not in compliance with her professional organizationpractice standards. Jeanne shared this information   with her coworkers. An overview of the data set:

This data set represents hypothetical data from a study that examined how well some core personality traits predict a person’s level of popularity. Personality was measured using the “Big 5,” which is a very commonly used measure of personality. In fact, a Big 5 personality scale was included in the Module Two discussion.

Here is some more information about the variables in this hypothetical data set:

• Number: This is the ID number of the participant

• Sex: Participants’ sex, with “1” standing for male and “2” standing for female

• Age: College year of the participant, with “1” standing for freshman, “2” standing for sophomore, etc.

• Popularity: Popularity measured with a questionnaire that could range from 0 to 100, with higher numbers indicating more popularity

• Extroversion: A Big 5 trait indicating level of sociability. Scores range from 1 to 5, with high numbers indicating extroverted and low numbers indicating introverted

• Agreeableness: A Big 5 trait indicating level of interpersonal warmth and friendliness. Scores range from 1 to 5, with high numbers indicating warmth and low numbers indicating coldness towards others

• Conscientiousness: A Big 5 trait indicating level of self-control and responsibility. Scores range from 1 to 5, with high numbers indicating high conscientiousness and low numbers indicating low conscientiousness

• Neuroticism: A Big 5 trait indicating level of anxiety and emotional stability. Scores range from 1 to 5, with high numbers indicating high neuroticism and low numbers indicating low neuroticism

In the field of human services, cases may sometimes seem more direct than they truly are, posing challenges in defining problems for clients. It is important, however, to recognize the multidimensionality of clients’ needs in order to provide optimal service in these situations. For this Discussion, review the media program “Introduction to the Case Study” for an overview by Dr. Barbara Benoliel. As you have been exploring human behavior and the social environment, you have likely increased your awareness of the many biological, psychological, and sociological factors that affect individual behavior. Human relationships are complex, and social workers may find it difficult to keep these important interactions in mind when addressing a client’s needs. Using A Logic Model To Focus Interventions And Achieve Desired Outcomes

In social work practice and in program development, it is possible to make faulty assumptions about what clients need and what social work activities will lead to. Consider the following:

 

A team of social workers meets to discuss their services to low-income young mothers. One social worker states that what the young mothers need most is information about community resources. She proposes that the social workers’ activities consist of making referrals to programs for public assistance for income support, food stamps, medical insurance, employment agencies, and educational resources. However, another team member points out that most clients are referred to their program from the public welfare office and health care programs. This suggests that the clients tend to possess knowledge of these common resources and have been able to access them.

How might the team explore what problems bring the clients to their agency? What might the team learn from client assessments? How can the team verify the desired outcomes of their services? Developing a logic model will help the team see a logical connection between problems, needs, intervention activities, and corresponding outcomes. This series of logical connections leads to formulating a theory of change, that is, a theory about how our work leads to the outcomes for clients.

 

To prepare for this Discussion, imagine that you are part of a work group charged with creating a logic model and generating a theory of change. Select a practitioner-level intervention for which you are interested in analyzing connections. Consider how a logic model might be applied to that practice.
