Ale 2 Response

Qualitative field research is the process of observing and experiencing other groups’ social life. This type of research seeks to discover how groups act in certain social settings such as observing gang life (Bachman & Schutt, 2014).

This type of research is time-consuming; which can be both an advantage and a limitation. It is an advantage in that the time spent with these social groups can give in-depth and thorough understanding of the topic researched. It is a limitation in that it requires field notes, observations, maintaining relationships, and analyzing that data (Bachman & Schutt, 2014). This creates a long and drawn out process.

A strength in this type of research allows the researcher to create a rapport with these social groups. This rapport helps the participants trust and open up in a way that creates a better understanding of the participant’s situations. A limitation is that the researcher can have a hard time maintaining appropriate boundaries. The researcher spends time with these people and it can be hard to remain unbiased. A researcher can seek to learn about the group but should not become an active participant or become involved. It can cause the researcher to become conflicted and create bias data (Fogel, 2007).

A good criminal justice topic would be the study of young males joining gangs. The research questions could be: ‘What happens to these young men that make them want to join a gang? How do they manage the demands of the gang?’”
